Partner Spotlight: Cottages of Fox Lake
Cottages of Fox Lake, a Charter Senior Living Community, discussed their services and unique programming with Transitions headed into 2021’s Alzheimer’s and Dementia Staff Training Week.
Alzheimer’s and Dementia Staff Training Week is February 14-21. Each year, the National Certification Council of Dementia Practitioners (NCCDP) promotes Alzheimer’s and trainings and a toolkit of resources to support ongoing staff education. NCCDP offers more than 14 certifications, including Certified Dementia Practitioner® (CDP) Certification and Certified Alzheimer’s Disease and Dementia Care Trainer® (CADDCT).
At Charter Senior Living, we are committed to our staff. Ongoing training is essential to ensure our team has the skills and knowledge to be successful in interacting and partnering with our residents, who need support to live more enriched and meaningful lives. In fact, a CADDCT is on staff who teaches the CDP class once a community has 10 or more staff wanting to pursue the training and application process. We offer CDP classes and trainings to all of our staff and encourage all staff to become CDP certified, as it can make a world of difference to the dementia patients we serve. Additionally, Charter Senior Living has six hours of foundational training for all Memory Care (and other) staff, including Communication, Dementia Overview, Challenging Behaviors, Sundowning and Social Isolation.
At one of our premier communities, Cottages of Fox Lake, residents living with memory loss live in a first-class community offering familiar, homelike comfort. Our lifestyle empowers residents living with memory loss to live as purposefully, independently and happily as possible for as long as possible. In addition to receiving assistance and support with daily personal care tasks, residents also benefit from our renowned FlourishSM Memory Care Program. Ours exclusively, Flourish promotes enriching, engaging living by emphasizing individual strengths, abilities, passions, and joys.
FlourishSM Memory Care Program addresses the unique needs of residents living with Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias while providing them with helpful support, loving care and personalized programming that honors who they are and where they are in their journeys. This program encourages whole person programming and takes a shift from the industry standard of ‘patients’ and ‘task’ sheets towards valuable people with specific strengths and skills. The goal of the program is to help those who are seeking purpose and meaning in their own lives. There are five Flourish trainings that cover programming basics like communicating effectively, meeting needs, how to lead a small group with “Grab and Go’s,” making family visits exceptional, and sensory interventions. We also invite family members and the broader community for these Flourish-specific training opportunities. In addition, many communities explore Dementia support groups and community outreach with a Dementia Mastery Series (9 topics) with subjects like, “How Will I Know, Keeping Your Brain Healthy, Caring for the Caregiver, Brain Health” and “The 6 Cognitive Domain, Deepen Your Knowledge, Innovative Roundup, and Natural Interventions.”
To Enhance the Human Spirit is our clear mission. Our Core Values: Serve with Heart, Serve with Purpose, Serve with Courage, Have Fun while Serving. The Charter difference.
